Stage Ready: Building a Legacy of Making in our Prop Making Club
At Halley House School, the magic of the theatre doesn't just happen on stage—it starts in the art studio! Our Prop Making Club has been buzzing with energy as our young makers dive into the tactile, messy, and incredibly rewarding world of construction.
From Small Starts to Big Imaginations
We’ve been focusing on the foundational skills of "the build." Using everyday materials, our students have been learning that with a bit of tape, cardboard, and patience, anything is possible. Recently, we’ve been:
Engineering with Cardboard: Learning how to manipulate flat sheets into sturdy, 3D structures that can withstand the rigours of a performance.
The Art of the Bind: Using masking tape and joint techniques to secure complex shapes, ensuring every prop is stage-ready.
Textural Foundations: Exploring how to layer materials to create realistic (or fantastical!) surfaces.
Building a Creative Community
The Prop Making Club is about more than just a single afternoon of fun. We are intentionally building a creative skillset within the Halley House community. By starting these techniques early, our students develop "maker-confidence"—the belief that they can design and execute their own visions.
As these skills grow and pass down through the year groups, we are creating a culture where children don’t just use props; they invent them.
A Vision for the Year 6 Play
This journey leads to an exciting milestone: the Year 6 Leavers' Play. In the past, schools might have bought or borrowed plastic props. But at Halley House, we have a different vision.
By the time our students reach Year 6, they will be master makers. They will have the skills to:
Design props that perfectly fit their specific characters and scripts.
Construct large-scale armatures using recycled materials.
Finish their creations with expert paper-mâché and painting techniques, resulting in unique, handmade pieces they can be proud of.
Giving children the agency to create their own stage-world makes the final performance so much more meaningful. We can’t wait to see the incredible paper-mâché masterpieces our future Year 6s will bring to life!
