The Big Draw 2025: Halley House School Celebrate Black History Month

The Big Draw 2025: Halley House School Celebrate Black History Season

In October 2025, we hold a two week, special drawing event for Black History Month. This year, our sessions for The Big Draw coincided with Black History Month, allowing the children to combine a two week focus on drawing skills with their own selection of inspiring icons.

The project was a vibrant celebration of identity, heritage, and the artistic process. By focusing on both individual expression and collective effort, the students created a body of work that truly honoured the contributions of Black figures throughout history.

Project Highlights:

  • Portraiture & Identity: Students studied over 30 illustrated portraits of Black British icons, using these as a springboard to discuss the lives of leaders, pioneers, and local Hackney legends.

  • Developing Fine Motor Skills: We explored various drawing techniques, from intricate line work to layered coloured pencil, helping students build confidence in their technical abilities.

  • Connecting with Hackney's Heritage: Inspiration was drawn from our local surroundings and archives like Autograoh Gallery.

It was an inspiring two weeks art classes of creativity that showed how drawing can be a universal language for learning and celebration. We are incredibly proud of the hard work and thoughtfulness shown by all the Halley House pupils.
