The Premise & Method
Premise: Everything is designed a ring, a collection of jewellery, a curriculum, a business, a journey and most is designed with a scale of awaness. The more awaness and deliberate thought in the design process the more likely the design is to be successful. How does this awaness become explicit - and not hidden and out of reach? Through talking about how much of our lives are designed. The primes of this book his that design is learnable, repeatable process and that the best teacher of it is the thing that has been solving design questions the longest: nature. Botanical life has been modifying and designing in a constant process of growth.
Method: Observe, Isolate, Arrange and Grow. Observe - to look in great detail and to teach this through Betty Edwards drawing method. To Isolate - often once something is observed we want to stick in a book, pin out down rather than play and leave that observation free - to lift its away from the noise of the back ground so we can re look and look again. Arrange - this is an embodied act and physical act - moving and shifting, placing and adjusting - the action and reflection. During this process to keep on looking and the new connections, new inventions and new iterations will come from the play and movement. Then pin down the new design modality and design so we create Growth.
Scope: this design process - all aspects of life have a design element and if we teach the design process as an active component all of us will have more agency to effect our own lives and that of our communities.
